Peacocks Behaviour

Some of these suggest direct benefits to females, such as protection, shelter, or nuptial gifts that sway the female's choice of mate. 6 Females generally have more to lose when mating with an inferior male due to her gametes being more costly than the male's. The sexual struggle is of two kinds; in the one it is between individuals of the same sex, generally the males, in order to drive away or kill their rivals, the females remaining passive; whilst in the other, the struggle is likewise between the individuals of the same sex, in order to excite or charm those of the opposite sex, generally the females, which no longer remain passive, but select the more agreeable partners.

Brown feathers are a mixture of red and blue: one colour is created by the periodic structure and the other is created by a Fabry-Pérot interference peak from reflections from the outer and inner boundaries. Leucistic peafowl can produce pigment but not deposit the pigment to their feathers. Plumage varies between individual spaldings, with some looking far more like green peafowl and some looking far more like blue peafowl, though most visually carry traits of both.

Hybrids between Indian and Green peafowl are called Spaldings, after the first person to successfully hybridise them, Mrs. It will prevent the peacocks eating plants, at the very least. Use netting for controlling peacocks in the garden and prevent them from eating all your produce.

Do not feed peacocks and hit them when you can with water. They attack other males or even the image of another peacock and do damage to cars, windows, skylights and any reflective surface. Eat, peacocks eating plants may become a way of life for you without serious intervention.

A lek is a group of males, each with their own small territory, taking part in mating rituals such as displaying their train, dancing, and calling out in order to attract the females. They are Pavo cristatus (Indian peacock), Pavo muticus (green peacock), and Afropavo congensis (Congo peacock). There are three species of peacocks that belong to the genus Pavo, subfamily Phasianinae and family Phasianidae.

What about male peafowl, female peafowl and courtship displays? Peafowl like to wander, so if your peafowl are free range, it is extra important to feed them well so they want to return at night and don't go seeking food elsewhere. You can feed bread or fruit as an occasional treat, but never give your peafowl bones, as they may choke.

Wherever you keep your peafowl, make sure it is dry and warm, as muddy or wet conditions can cause disease or tail feather breakage. Our easy-to-read, comprehensive poultry guides will show you everything you must know about raising peacocks and raising peahens. Once they reach a mature age, you may transition the peafowl to standard peacock and peahen feed as discussed previously.

If breeding peafowl, you should feed them a gamebird maintenance formulation available from your local feed or farm supply store.
